This project is a National Monument and was commissioned by the city of Nantes, France and its Mayor, Jean-Marc Ayrault, after winning an invited international competition. The project involves the transformation of 350 meters of the coast of the Loire River, in Downtown Nantes. It provides both space and means for remembering and thinking about slavery and the slave trade; commemorating resistance and the abolitionist struggle; celebrating the historic act of abolition; and for bringing the visitor closer to the continuing struggle against present-day forms of slavery.

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) today unveiled the design for the new Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) designed by Steven Holl and Chris McVoy. Part exhibition and performance space, part lab and incubator, the 38,000-square-foot building will feature a series of flexible programming spaces for the presentation of visual art, theater, music, dance and film for both on-campus and public audiences.
