Marcel Kalberer plants and binds branches of willow trees to weave out living natural structures inspired by the ancient practice of Mesopotamians 5000 years ago to build their dwellings. According to him, the best time for building and planting vegetal architectures with living willow rods is in March and April. Every year the SANFTE STRUKTUREN group develops three projects in this two month period. In 2012 the group was asked to create a church and a cultural center in Germany and a place of meeting and relaxation in Northern Italy.
The living architecture of Kalberer is the kind of architecture that is capable to supply our inner needs of connection to nature and to vigorous processes of healthy development and life of human society. According to all who are experienced, these types of structures have positive effects on the human mind and soul, making life happier and healthier.
The poetic exposed wooden structure, forming a space framed by cedar members and a panoramic view of the landscape. The stunning project is reminiscent of the exposed layered structures found in traditional Japanese architecture except with new artistic interpretation of Kuma.
